Step 2. Leading in

And then, I will hold a free talk. Students will be divided into groups and talk about their health problems and give advice. They may talk like this:

—What’s the matter with you?

—It was cold yesterday and I didn’t wear enough clothes. Now I have a cold. What should I do?

—I think you should drink some hot tea and keep warm.

By singing a familiar song together, students’ attention is easily drawn to the lesson naturally. Creating a situation helps to form a better English learning environment and leads the topic in.

Step 2. Pre-reading

In this step, I will guide students to look at the picture of the text to guess “what the passage may talk about?” to cultivate their predicting ability. Some students will be invited to talk about their predictions on the text.

In this way, students can reduce the strangeness of the text and enable them to learn the new knowledge in a relaxing atmosphere.

Step 3. While-reading

For this step, I will guide students to take part in 3 activities.

Skimming

I will give a few minutes for students to read the text quickly. Students need to read the text fast to check their predictions. Then students need to answer the questions:

1. Do you think it comes from a newspaper or a book? How do you know?

2. Did the bus driver help the man and the woman?

And in this way, students can practice their ability to acquire information quickly and get the main idea.

Scanning

Activity 1:

I will guide students to read the passage again and try to check the things that happened in the story.

1. Wang Ping was the driver of bus No.26 at 9:00 a.m. yesterday.

2. Bus No.26 hit an old man on Zhonghua Road.

3. The old man had a heart problem and needed to go to the hospital.

4. The passengers on the bus did not want to get to the hospital, so only Wang Ping went with the woman and old man.

5. Some passengers helped to get the old man onto the bus.

6. The old man got to the hospital in time.

These six sentences are detailed information in the passage. After doing that, students can learn how to find out the simple information through scanning.

Activity 2:

I will encourage students to discuss the following questions with their partner.

1. Why was Wang Ping surprised that the passengers agreed to go to the hospital with him?

2. Did the passengers think Wang Ping do the right thing? How do you know?

3. Do you agree that people often do not help others because they do not want to get into trouble? Why or why not?

In the process of answering the above questions, the teacher can give instructions to help students eliminate language barriers. Therefore, students will have a further understanding of the passage.

Careful reading

I will play the tape recorder paragraph by paragraph, and guide students to read for a third time. Then some students will be asked to translate some key sentences, and the teacher will explain some words and phrases: passenger, off, get off, to one’s surprise, onto, trouble, etc. to help students further understand the text.

In this way, students can guess the meaning of certain unknown words and understand the passage exactly.

Step 4. Post-reading

Task: do a discussion

I will divide the whole class into groups. Four students are in a group. Students do a discussion in the group about “If you were the driver, what would you do?” The leader of each group should write down their opinion. After several minutes, I will invite some groups to give a report in front of the class.

The purpose is to develop students’ creative thinking and lead them learning by doing.

Step 5. Summary

For the summary of this lesson, students will summarize what they have learnt in this class, and I will make supplements. What’s more, I will help students to cultivate the spirit of helping others and establish the consciousness of self-protection at the same time.

The purpose is to strengthen students’ understanding of the new knowledge. Thus, students can summarize what they have learnt. Meanwhile, I can check the effect of the class and make plans for the next class.

Step 6. Homework

For the final part of this lesson, I will ask students to surf the Internet to find more stories about helping others. Students are encouraged to share to the whole class the next day.

By doing the homework, students can consolidate what they have learned, which can also enhance their interest.

六、说板书设计

After finishing the part of teaching procedure, I will come to the last section: design of the blackboard, here is my blackboard design. I will write the key information on the blackboard. As you can see, it is simple and clear for students to take notes.
