三、Teaching Procedures
Step 1. Lead-in
The teacher plays a video clip (The new school year begins and the freshmen of senior high school accompanied by their parents come to the new school to register, some of whom are being interviewed by the journalist from a famous newspaper in the city) and asks students to do a free talk about the video with the guidance of the teacher’s questions “What can you see from the video?” and “What’s it about?” Then the teacher guides students to answer the questions “How did you feel on your first day of senior high school?”, “Did you feel excited?”, “Did you feel anxious?” and “Did you feel frightened?” based on the related emojis, which naturally lead to the main topics of this lesson: the first day and the first impression in the senior high school.
Step 2. Pre-reading
1. The teacher simply introduces the protagonist, Han Jing.
2. Then the teacher leads students to guess the main idea of the text and where it is taken from according to the title and illustrations with the guidance of the following questions:
① What does Han Jing talk about in the text?
② Can you guess where the text is taken from?
Step 3. While-reading
Skimming
Students do fast-reading to check their guessing. After that, they need to finish a match task. Then draw simple emoji pictures to show Han Jing’s feelings on her first school day.
Match each paragraph with their correct core idea.
Students are asked to read the text paragraph by paragraph. This time, they need to pay more attention to the detailed information. After reading, they should finish two exercises.
Exercise1. Answer the following questions:
① Why did Han Jing feel anxious before school?
② How was her first maths class?
③ What happened in the Chemistry class? What would you do if this happened to you?
④ What did Han Jing learn from her first day at senior high school?
(Keys: ①She’s not outgoing. ②It was difficult. ③The guy next to Han Jing tried to talk to her the whole time. (One possible answer) If this happened to me, I would ignore him. ④She learnt that she would make new friends there and there was a lot to explore at senior high school.
Exercise 2. Fill in the table with the words and phrases from the text.
(Keys: ①Senior high school, a little anxious; ②maths class, difficult, a kind and friendly teacher, happy; ③Chemistry class, the guy next to me tried to talk to me the whole time, couldn’t concentrate on the experiment, annoyed; ④didn’t feel awkward or frightened, will make new friends, a lot to explore, more confident)
Intensive reading
Students read the text for the last time. They need to find out the difficult points they can’t understand and the teacher will give the corresponding explanations. Then, students are asked to finish the following tasks.
